My idea for Simple Joys began in the early spring of 2011. After 30 years in the nursing profession and with my 3 children grown up and left home, I decided that it was time for a career change. I'd always dreamt of having a tea/craft shop but I began to realise that this was not going to happen. I do, however, live in a lovely, cosy, country cottage with a collection of pretty china so I thought that perhaps people might like to come here for tea instead! And perhaps they might like to learn to sew or knit or something whilst they were here?
When I was young, I learnt to knit and crochet from my mother and an elderly neighbour. I had an excellent needlework teacher at school and I had made a lot of my own and my childrens' clothes. Perhaps I could pass on some of my skills and knowledge.
I gave up my job (and the comfort of a regular income!), springcleaned the house and started to make things. At first I just wanted to make examples of items that I could teach other people to make but I soon became addicted to the buzz you get when you've created something good. I made enough items to set up a stall at some of the local farmers markets and used this opportunity to promote 'Simple Joys, Simple Pleasures - learn to sew or bake, knit or make.'
My original idea was that people might like to visit for the whole day for a craft workshop and lots of delicious food in the peace and quiet of the country. The day would be truly indulgent and beautifully relaxing leaving the visitor refreshed and re-energised. It became apparent however, that many people could only fit in a short visit and so now I also offer a 1-2hour lesson that can take place either here or in your own home, which ever is most convenient. I aim to provide all basic materials to start and I hugely enjoy the moment when I see someone create something that they are thrilled with.
